A Scottsdale, Arizona man has been charged with stealing a staggering $223,000 in cryptocurrency from unsuspecting passengers who thought he was an Uber driver.
According to court documents, Nuruhussein Hussein, 40, allegedly picked up two victims who were waiting for their rides outside a hotel. He then pretended to help them with technical issues on his own phone before using the opportunity to access and steal funds from their Coinbase accounts.
The scheme, which authorities have deemed “an extremely sophisticated electronic fraud,” is thought to be an isolated incident.
Hussein’s modus operandi involved luring victims into a false sense of security by playing the role of a helpful Uber driver. Once he had gained their trust, he would then exploit their vulnerability by accessing their digital wallets and making off with substantial sums of money.
The victims in this case were targeted while waiting for their rides outside a hotel. It is unclear at this time how Hussein managed to convince them to let him access their financial information.
Gizmodo has learned that the Scottsdale Police Department is actively investigating the incident, but no additional details have been released.
It remains to be seen whether this incident will lead to changes in the way Uber handles customer interactions or if similar cases may occur in the future.
