OpenAI fires back against Musk, claims he wanted an OpenAI for-profit
OpenAI has fired back at Elon Musk’s lawsuit, claiming that the billionaire entrepreneur initially proposed creating a for-profit version of the AI research organization.
In a series of emails published by TechCrunch, OpenAI alleges that Musk suggested transforming the nonprofit into a profit-driven entity in 2017. However, when his proposal was rejected, he allegedly abandoned the idea and instead chose to create his own AI company, xAI.
The development is part of an ongoing legal battle between OpenAI and Musk, who has accused the organization of abandoning its original nonprofit mission to make the fruits of its AI research available to all. The dispute has also drawn in other key players, including Microsoft, Stripe, and Google.
OpenAI’s latest claims come as it seeks to counter allegations that it is engaging in self-dealing and illegally sharing proprietary information with Microsoft.
