OpenAI disputes Musk’s claims, says he pushed for a for-profit model from the start
December 13, 2024 – In a recent blog post, OpenAI has responded to Elon Musk’s lawsuit by claiming that it was actually Musk who advocated for a for-profit model from the organization’s early days.
According to OpenAI, emails and events from as far back as 2015 show Musk questioning the initial nonprofit status and pushing for a profit-driven structure. The organization claims that Musk proposed establishing a public benefit corporation in 2017 as a future framework for this transition.
Musk reportedly demanded majority equity, unilateral control, and the CEO position as conditions for the transition. OpenAI rejected these terms to prevent AGI development from being controlled by a single individual.
