OpenAI Fires Back Against Musk, Claims He Wanted An OpenAI For-Profit
OpenAI has fired back at Elon Musk’s lawsuit, alleging that the billionaire entrepreneur initially sought to transform the non-profit AI research organization into a for-profit venture.
The company published a series of emails on Friday, claiming they demonstrate that Musk proposed turning OpenAI into a for-profit entity in 2017. According to OpenAI, Musk wanted the organization to pivot and focus on creating commercial products rather than its initial mission of making AI available to everyone.
“Elon withdrew from OpenAI because he didn’t get his way,” OpenAI stated in an email response. “You can’t sue your way to [artificial general intelligence]. We have great respect for Elon’s accomplishments and gratitude for his early contributions to OpenAI, but he should be competing in the marketplace rather than the courtroom.”
The back-and-forth legal battle between Musk and OpenAI has been ongoing for several months. Musk initially withdrew the lawsuit in July before reviving it later this summer.
OpenAI’s claims come as a new development in the heated dispute, which centers around allegations of misuse of intellectual property and an attempt to stifle competition by demanding that investors not fund other AI startups.
The company emphasized its commitment to staying non-profit, stating that it would continue to develop and release AI technologies for public benefit.
