OpenAI Fires Back Against Musk, Claims He Wanted An OpenAI For-Profit
Artificial intelligence research company OpenAI has fired back at billionaire Elon Musk’s latest allegations, releasing a series of emails that allegedly show Musk wanting to turn the organization into a for-profit entity in 2017.
According to documents published by OpenAI, Musk proposed creating a profit-driven organization in order to accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, when he didn’t receive majority equity in the company, he abandoned the plan and instead went on to create his own AI-focused startup, xAI.
In response to Musk’s allegations that OpenAI has strayed from its original nonprofit mission to make the fruits of its research available to all, OpenAI stated that it is simply adapting to market conditions. “You can’t sue your way to [artificial general intelligence],” the company said in a statement.
Musk’s latest lawsuit against OpenAI was revived in late summer after he had initially dropped the case in July. The amended complaint named several new defendants, including OpenAI collaborator and investor Microsoft, as well as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who holds “material financial interests” in Stripe, a payment platform chosen by OpenAI.
Musk’s legal team claims that this arrangement amounts to self-dealing and is harming competition in the AI marketplace. In response, OpenAI stated that it has simply selected Stripe due to its efficiency and reliability as a payment processor.
Google has reportedly called for an investigation into Microsoft’s relationships with OpenAI, citing concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
It appears that Musk’s latest salvo in his ongoing legal battle with OpenAI will not yield the desired results.
