Francis Ngannou is reportedly in discussions to take on a high-profile opponent in the summer of 2025. According to sources familiar with the situation, the former UFC heavyweight champion has been engaged in talks with kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven.
Ngannou, who recently made his return to MMA by capturing the Professional Fighters League (PFL) SuperFight heavyweight championship, is said to be considering a match-up against the reigning Glory Kickboxing heavyweight champion. The fight, if it comes to fruition, would mark a significant crossover between two of combat sports’ most prominent figures.
Verhoeven, 35 years old, boasts an impressive professional record of 65-10 with 21 knockouts. In addition to his successful kickboxing career, the Dutch fighter has also had a foray into MMA and boxing, with victories in both disciplines.
While Ngannou is more likely to compete in mixed martial arts or boxing rather than kickboxing, Verhoeven’s extensive experience across multiple combat sports disciplines would make him a formidable opponent. The PFL, which Ngannou currently competes under, could potentially play a key role in promoting the bout.
A matchup between Ngannou and Verhoeven would be a huge coup for the PFL, which has faced criticism regarding its inactivity and lack of top-tier talent in recent months. Notably, several Bellator champions have expressed dissatisfaction with their schedules, while rising star Dakota Ditcheva has publicly stated her desire to face more challenging opponents in 2025.
PFL owner Donn Davis recently took to social media to reassure fans that the organization is poised for a transformative year ahead. A Ngannou-Verhoeven fight would undoubtedly be a major draw and help the PFL regain momentum following recent setbacks.
