You can now buy this nostalgic Game Boy Advance clone
Anbernic’s latest handheld console, the RG34XX, is now available for purchase. The device takes inspiration from Nintendo’s iconic Game Boy Advance and has been upgraded with extra features such as additional buttons, a larger screen, and game emulation capabilities.
The RG34XX can be ordered directly through Anbernic’s website at a price of $69.99, although it will be discounted to $63.99 until December 18th. The handheld console comes in four different color options, including the original Game Boy Advance purple and black combination as well as transparent green and red hues.
While the RG34XX may seem like an exact replica of the GBA, Anbernic has made some significant changes. In addition to the extra buttons mentioned earlier, the device also features microSD card slots, an HDMI port, and a larger 3.4-inch display with a 720×480 resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio. The volume control has been changed from a continuous dial to a two-way toggle switch that adjusts the volume up or down in small increments.
The RG34XX is powered by the Allwinner H700 chipset, which Anbernic has used previously in eight other devices. Unfortunately, this means that it will not be capable of playing games originally released for 3D consoles such as the Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and Sony PSP. However, it should handle 16-bit games with ease and excel at emulating the Game Boy Advance given its matching screen ratio.
Reviews from various sources are already available, and both Russ Crandall of Retro Game Corps and Keep Retro Retro Handhelds have had a chance to test the device. While opinions on the handheld’s ergonomics were mixed, both reviewers praised the emulator for being a “nearly perfect” recreation of Nintendo’s hardware.
The new secondary set of shoulder buttons on the RG34XX have been positioned in a way that may cause discomfort for users with larger hands. This issue was highlighted by Keep Retro Retro Handhelds, who found the device to be slightly cramped for their own larger hands. The primary shoulder buttons, located in the same position as the original GBA, were praised as comfortable and functional.
The RG34XX is now available for purchase from Anbernic’s website, offering fans of classic gaming a nostalgic yet upgraded alternative.
