
Snapchat is Overhauling How Influencers Earn Money on the Platform
In a major move to revamp its monetization strategy, Snapchat has announced a unified revenue program for creators, allowing them to earn money from both Stories and Spotlight content. The new program will enable influencers to monetize ads placed within eligible posts in these areas.
Under the previous structure, monetization was segregated across different platforms, with earnings for Stories and Spotlight handled separately. This change aims to streamline the process and provide a more comprehensive earning opportunity for creators. The revamped program is currently being tested by a small group of users and will be rolled out globally on February 1st, 2025.
To qualify for this new program, influencers must meet specific criteria. This includes having at least 50,000 followers and either 10 million Snap views, 1 million Spotlight views, or 12,000 hours of watch time within the last 28 days. Additionally, creators will need to post content consistently, with a minimum of 25 posts per month on saved Stories or Spotlight and posting to Spotlight or public Stories at least 10 times within the same timeframe.
These new requirements mark a significant increase in thresholds compared to previous eligibility standards. For instance, influencers previously needed only 1,000 followers and 10,000 video views to be eligible for earning money through Spotlight alone.
This move comes amidst changes in the creator economy across various platforms. TikTok has also recently revamped its original creator funds program, requiring videos longer than 1 minute. YouTube, on the other hand, now allows Shorts creators to earn revenue via ad revenue as part of a larger strategy to compete with TikTok’s dominance.
