Ireland’s media regulator has placed social media giant Meta on watch over its handling of terrorist content removals, issuing a decision against Facebook, which it owns.
According to reports, Coimisiún na Meán decided that Meta must take “specific measures” to prevent its services from being used for the dissemination of terrorist content. The company will also have to report back to the regulator on the actions taken to address these concerns.
This development follows a similar decision made by Coimisiún na Meán against Meta-owned Instagram, along with TikTok and X, in November.
The Irish regulator plays a significant role in regulating tech giants’ compliance with digital rule books due to many companies opting to locate their regional headquarters in Ireland.
