Focused Energy buys two of the world’s most powerful lasers for its fusion quest
Fusion power startup Focused Energy has signed a deal to purchase two of the world’s most powerful lasers, exclusively telling TechCrunch about the acquisition. The massive laser systems will be installed in the company’s forthcoming facility, which is under construction in the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to take around two years to complete.
The acquired lasers are among the highest-average-power lasers held by a private entity, according to Focused Energy CEO Scott Mercer. He emphasized that these powerful devices will play a critical role in the company’s fusion research endeavors.
The acquisition comes as no surprise given Focused Energy’s relentless pursuit of its innovative approach to nuclear fusion. The startup aims to create an inertial confinement system where multiple laser beams converge and compress a fuel pellet to the point where the pellet’s contents fuse, releasing energy in the process.
