Republican lawmakers are demanding answers from the State Department regarding claims that American citizens were blocked from leaving Afghanistan last year.
During a hearing with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) pressed Blinken to provide information on allegations that the State Department obstructed Americans’ efforts to leave Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in August 2021.
Massie cited reports suggesting that hundreds of American citizens were denied permission to depart from Mazar-i-Sharif airport, despite having valid travel documents and clearance for safe third countries. The congressman demanded to know if Blinken or his department had knowledge of these blockages.
“We need answers,” Massie declared. “Did you know that people who were waiting at the airfield in Mazar-i-Sharif were denied permission to depart from Afghanistan? Did you know that there were people with blue passports, American citizens, being blocked by your department?”
