An Incomplete List of the Times We’ve Panicked Over Lights in the Sky
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s probably just a normal airplane or a drone, but that doesn’t stop us from freaking out whenever we see something unusual flying overhead. Whether it’s a UFO (oh wait, it’s definitely not), a mysterious light in the sky, or just some pesky helicopter, humans have a long history of freaking out over things that might or might not be extraterrestrial.
Recently, there has been an uptick in sightings of “mysterious drones” or “UAVs” (yeah, we’re not buying it either) across the United States. These unidentified flying objects have been spotted by numerous individuals, causing widespread panic and speculation about their origin and purpose.
But this isn’t a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination. Let me take you on a trip down memory lane and recall all the times we’ve panicked over lights in the sky:
* 1947: “The Great Sighting” – Okay, so maybe it wasn’t exactly panic-inducing, but the sighting of a flying disc (or saucer) by multiple witnesses in Roswell, New Mexico did spark a national obsession with UFOs that has yet to subside.
* The 1980s: The Soviet Union’s “KGB Laser Beams” – Remember those rumors about the KGB using laser beams to blind and disorient American pilots? Yeah, it was just a rumor (probably), but it still managed to freak out some folks back in the day.
* September 11th, 2001: Those mysterious “drones” over New York City – Ah, yes, those were definitely not crop dusters or, you know, actual planes. Nope, they had to be… aliens! Or government surveillance! (Or maybe just a weird flock of birds?)
* The 2010s: China’s “Invisible Drones” – Remember when those supposed stealth drones from China started appearing over major cities? Yeah, it was probably just some prankster with a drone and a lot of spare change. Still though, we got worked up about it.
* 2024-present: Mysterious Drone Sightings Across the United States – Well, this one’s still ongoing, folks! But let me tell you, there are plenty of “experts” out there telling us that these drones are totally not extraterrestrial in origin. Yeah right, buddy!
So the next time someone tells you to calm down about those lights in the sky, just remember: we’ve been doing this for decades!
