Republican Demands Info From State Department On Delayed Afghanistan Flights
A senior Republican is demanding answers from the Biden administration regarding allegations of the U.S. government blocking American citizens from departing from a key airfield in Afghanistan during the chaotic withdrawal last year.
According to Fox News, Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is seeking information from the State Department on reports that officials at the Mazar-i-Sharif airport blocked or delayed flights carrying U.S. citizens and vulnerable Afghans.
During a hearing earlier this week, McCaul asked Secretary Antony Blinken if the State Department had any role in blocking American citizens’ departures from the airfield, to which Blinken responded, “Absolutely not.” However, another Republican member, Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), claimed that he has evidence proving otherwise.
“We know it’s true because I have emails and photographs of blue passport-holding Americans who were on the airfield waiting to depart, and the order came down from the United States government,” Massie said.
