Amazon has announced a sudden delay to its return-to-office mandate in several cities due to the unavailability of office space.
The e-commerce giant had previously planned to require all employees to work from home no more than two days a week starting in January, according to reports. However, it seems that Amazon’s plans have been put on hold indefinitely.
In an internal memo, obtained by Gizmodo, Amazon cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the delay. Sources close to the matter suggest that Amazon is struggling to find suitable office space in several cities, making it impossible to implement its return-to-office policy.
While Amazon has not publicly confirmed the reason for the delay, a company spokesperson told Gizmodo that they are “working diligently to address the issue” and will provide more information when available.
The move comes as a surprise given Amazon’s previous stance on remote work. Just last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed his support for hybrid work arrangements in an internal memo.
