Perplexity acquires Carbon to connect AI search to your work files
Perplexity has acquired a small Seattle-based startup called Carbon, which specializes in connecting AI systems to external data sources. This move allows the company to integrate its AI technology with popular enterprise applications such as Notion, Google Docs, Slack, and other similar platforms.
According to Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivasan, this acquisition will enable the company’s answer engine to be informed by diverse sources of information, including internal databases, cloud storage, or document repositories. This would allow employees to quickly search through their company’s accumulated unstructured data in a more efficient manner.
Perplexity has made its second acquisition following its 2023 purchase of Spellwise, which was used to develop the company’s mobile app.
It is worth noting that Perplexity is now entering the competitive enterprise AI search space. OpenAI, Google, and several other prominent players have reportedly inspired Glean, a current market leader in this area, to develop their own enterprise search products.
As a result, it seems likely that Perplexity’s decision to acquire Carbon will be met with interest from investors and competitors alike.
