PlayStation’s Mark Cerny recently went in-depth about the PS5 Pro and its innovative features, including its collaboration with AMD. During a 37-minute video, Cerny provided insight into the upgraded GPU architecture of the PS5 Pro, which he referred to as “RDNA 2.X”.
It appears that the new console is not just a simple upgrade but rather a culmination of efforts by Sony and AMD to push the boundaries of gaming technology. According to Cerny, the PS5 Pro utilizes a mixture of existing RDNA 2 tech from the original PS5, along with cherry-picked features from AMD’s more advanced RDNA 3 architecture introduced in 2022.
Furthermore, Cerny revealed that the PS5 Pro is also equipped with custom machine learning capabilities that have been specifically designed for this console. These AI-driven components are not only a key part of the PS5 Pro but will also be a crucial component of AMD and Sony’s future partnership.
As part of their new collaboration, the companies have dubbed their joint project “Amethyst”. Cerny explained that Amethyst is focused on developing more ideal architectures for machine learning applications. This development has far-reaching implications as it may not only benefit future consoles but also AMD’s own GPUs.
