Where to Watch ’28 Days Later’ Now That Sony Has Freed It From Streaming Prison
In a shocking turn of events, Sony has finally freed the 2003 post-apocalyptic thriller “28 Days Later” from its streaming prison. For years, this cult classic was locked away from the public eye due to rights issues. But fear not, dear fans! You can now watch it once more.
To clarify, you won’t be able to stream it on a service like Hulu or Amazon Prime Video. Instead, you’ll need to purchase or rent the movie from platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home. The cost? A reasonable $5-6 to rent and $15 to buy.
Before diving in, be warned: this film has aged significantly since its initial release in 2003. As a pioneering digital film, it was intentionally shot with a hazy and lo-fi aesthetic. While this may have been an innovative choice at the time, it can be jarring when viewed on modern OLED screens. Fortunately, Sony chose not to tamper with the original quality, likely recognizing that any attempts to improve the visuals would only detract from the movie’s artistic integrity.
Despite these visual differences, “28 Days Later” still holds up remarkably well today. The cast, including Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Naomie Harris (Skyfall/Spectre), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), has gone on to achieve great success in their respective careers.
If you’re excited for the upcoming sequel, “28 Years Later,” which stars Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, then you won’t have long to wait. The film is set to release next year.
