James Bond (the movie franchise, not the spy) may be in deep jeopardy
The iconic James Bond film franchise is facing an uncertain future due to a bitter feud between its producer, Barbara Broccoli, and Amazon, which acquired the rights to distribute Bond films as part of its $8.5 billion purchase of MGM in 2022.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the two parties are at odds over creative control and the direction of the franchise. It appears that Amazon’s plans for the series have been met with resistance from Broccoli, who has been instrumental in shaping the franchise since her father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, founded Eon Productions.
The standoff began when Amazon executives started exploring ways to expand the Bond franchise beyond films, including a Moneypenny spinoff series and separate spy film or TV show. However, Broccoli refused to give the green light for these projects, which has stalled production on an upcoming film.
Sources close to the situation suggest that tensions escalated after Amazon entertainment executive Jennifer Salke used the term “content” to describe new James Bond projects. This seemingly minor issue highlights the deeper divide between the two parties.
It appears that Broccoli is fiercely protective of the brand and her father’s cinematic legacy, having been involved with the franchise for nearly as long as she has lived. She has also begun training Gregg Wilson, son of co-producer Michael Wilson, to take over the franchise in the future.
The dispute has reached a boiling point, with one source describing Broccoli’s feelings towards Amazon executives as “these people are f—ing idiots.” The situation has put the future of the James Bond film series into jeopardy, leaving fans wondering if they will ever see another 007 movie.
It remains to be seen how this impasse will be resolved.
