James Gunn has given insight into how a potential DC Universe film based on Batman villain Clayface seemed to emerge from nowhere in recent weeks.
In an exclusive interview with io9, we got some surprising information about the upcoming DC movie. James Gunn revealed that he had been quietly working on the script for several years, even before his appointment as the Chief Creative Officer of DC Studios.
“I’ve always been fascinated by Clayface’s character,” Gunn said during our conversation. “He’s such a compelling and complex villain. I started writing the script in my spare time, even when I was still at Marvel working on Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Gunn continued to work on the script throughout his tenure as director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and The Suicide Squad, taking breaks whenever he had downtime.
When asked about how quickly the project came together, Gunn stated that it’s a combination of both his dedication to the project and the recent changes in the DC Universe.
