Three years ago, I made the decision to give up drinking altogether. It wasn’t an easy choice, but after struggling with addiction and realizing the damage it was causing in my life, I knew I had to make a change.
At first, it was tough. I missed the feeling of relaxation that came with a drink, the social benefits of sipping on a glass (or three) with friends, and the comforting ritual of unwinding with a glass of wine after a long day.
But then I stumbled upon an idea that changed everything for me: There’s no such thing as ‘just a glass.’
It sounds simple, but it has had a profound impact on my recovery. You see, when we drink, we often convince ourselves that it’s just one little drink, one small indulgence. But the reality is, it’s never just about one drink. It’s about an entire mindset – a desire to escape, to numb our emotions, or to fit in.
When I realized this, something clicked. I stopped making excuses for my drinking and started taking responsibility for my actions. I began to recognize the triggers that led me to reach for the bottle (stress, boredom, FOMO) and replaced them with healthier coping mechanisms.
It’s not about deprivation; it’s about self-care.
