A funeral home in Ohio is applying for a liquor license to offer alcohol services at memorial events, marking a shift in the traditional somber atmosphere of these gatherings.
According to Fox News Digital, Evergreen Funeral, Cremation and Reception is not yet approved for a liquor license, but has submitted an application. The move comes as some funeral homes across the country begin to adapt to changing consumer preferences and desires for more personalized and celebratory memorial services.
While some may see the introduction of alcohol at funerals as a departure from traditional norms, etiquette expert Diane Gottsman argues that it’s not necessarily appropriate in this setting.
“Having an open bar at a funeral home sets a different tone,” she told Fox News Digital. “It’s not the norm to be offered alcohol at a funeral home – and it comes with the risk of suggesting a bar or party atmosphere.”
In contrast, Jon Kolssak, owner of Kolssak Funeral Home in Illinois, emphasizes that the goal is not to turn his establishment into a bar, but rather to enhance the overall experience for families and loved ones.
“It’s about celebrating a life well-lived,” he explained.
