James Bond (the movie franchise, not the spy) may be in Deep Jeopardy
The iconic James Bond film series has been a staple of Hollywood for decades. However, it appears that the future of the franchise is now uncertain due to an ongoing dispute between producer Barbara Broccoli and Amazon, following their acquisition of MGM in 2022.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the two parties are at odds over creative control and the direction of the series. It seems that Broccoli has serious reservations about working with Amazon, deeming them unsuitable for handling the beloved franchise due to their primary focus on retail and e-commerce rather than film production.
The tension began when Amazon acquired MGM, gaining rights to distribute Bond films. Despite initial assurances that creative control would remain in place, it appears that Amazon executives have other plans in mind, seeking to expand the franchise into various mediums such as a Moneypenny spinoff series for Prime Video or a separate spy film/TV show within the Bond universe.
Broccoli, fiercely protective of the brand and her father’s cinematic legacy, has refused to budge on these proposals. The situation has become so dire that even training Wilson’s son Gregg to produce recent installments and potentially prepare him to take over the franchise in the future has led to disagreements over who should play Bond in the next film – a development that seems unlikely in the near future.
With production halted, it remains unclear when or if a new Bond film will be made.
