Craig Wright Faces 12-Month Suspended Sentence for Contempt in Satoshi Claims
In a recent development, Australian computer scientist and self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator Craig Wright has been slapped with a 12-month suspended sentence for contempt of court. This ruling comes as a direct result of Wright’s persistent refusal to comply with the court’s previous orders regarding his claims about being the anonymous individual behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
According to reports, Wright had previously been ordered by the High Court in London not to file any legal proceedings claiming he was Satoshi Nakamoto or the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper. However, in October 2024, Wright went against these orders and filed a new $1.14 trillion lawsuit, claiming that Bitcoin had deviated from “Satoshi’s vision.” This move prompted COPA (Crypto Open Patent Alliance) to bring contempt charges against him.
The court documents reveal that Judge James Mellor emphasized the importance of this ruling by stating it was designed to prevent Wright from further violating the court’s orders. Should Wright fail to comply with these conditions over the next two years, he may be forced to serve a jail sentence.
It is worth noting that Wright remained uncooperative during the sentencing process, refusing to disclose his physical location and participating only through virtual meetings. He also maintained his stance despite the mounting legal consequences of his actions.
The court has explicitly prohibited him from pursuing any further court proceedings based on claims of being Bitcoin’s creator or owning related intellectual property. As a result, Wright must now cease claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto for at least two years and comply with all future court orders to avoid serving jail time.
While Wright has already indicated that he plans to appeal the court’s verdict, COPA’s legal counsel, Tristan Sherliker, has emphasized that this ruling marks the definitive end of Wright’s claims regarding his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto.
