Songyee Yoon, the “Genius Girl,” has defied expectations and gone on to become the president of South Korean video game developer NCSoft after completing her PhD from MIT. The inspiration behind a Korean television show, she is now announcing Principle Venture Partners (PVP), a $100 million fund dedicated to backing AI startups.
Yoon’s journey began with late-night computing sessions on her college campus, where she would often walk across the grounds at 2 or 3 am to await the results of her programs. She was so unique that a writer used her as inspiration for a TV character.
Now, Yoon is leveraging her expertise and reputation to create PVP, an early-stage venture capital fund focused on AI innovation. The fund will invest in startups across various sectors, with a particular interest in transforming the insurance industry through AI applications.
In a bold move, Yoon has expressed concerns over AI’s potential to exacerbate cultural colonialism, citing the lack of representation and access to data for many cultures. She believes that diverse perspectives are essential to creating equitable AI solutions.
As she continues her mission to champion underrepresented voices in the industry, Yoon emphasized the importance of continuous conversations and increased representation through the fund.
