Spotify has responded to the legal action taken by Universal Music Group (UMG) against the music streaming giant, blasting “false” claims and demanding dismissal.
As previously reported by Billboard, UMG filed a lawsuit in a Los Angeles federal court on Tuesday, December 20, alleging that Spotify had failed to obtain proper licenses for its vast library of user-generated content. The suit also claimed that Spotify had refused to comply with UMG’s requests to remove infringing content from the platform.
However, in its response filed Wednesday, Spotify vehemently denied all allegations made by UMG, calling them “false and misleading.” The company stated that it has a robust system in place for managing user-generated content and that any alleged infringement was not intentional.
“We are committed to ensuring that our users have a safe and legal platform for creating and sharing music,” Spotify said in its response. “Our systems are designed to detect and remove infringing content, and we take allegations of copyright infringement seriously.”
The streaming giant further accused UMG of attempting to manipulate the court system by making unfounded claims and seeking excessive damages.
“UMG’s lawsuit is a baseless attempt to exploit Spotify for its own financial gain,” the company stated. “We will not be intimidated or deterred from continuing to provide our users with the best possible experience.”
Spotify has also requested that the court dismiss UMG’s claims, arguing that they are “without merit” and constitute an abuse of legal process.
The lawsuit between Spotify and UMG is ongoing, and both parties have expressed their commitment to resolving the matter amicably.
