Senators Approve Bill to Expand Social Security to Millions of Americans
In a historic vote, the U.S. Senate has passed the Social Security Fairness Act, paving the way for millions of Americans to receive increased Social Security benefits. The legislation, which eliminates two federal policies that have denied full benefits to nearly 3 million retirees, is now headed to President Joe Biden’s desk for signature.
The bill, which was introduced last year and gained bipartisan support with 62 cosponsors in the House, has been decades in the making. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the passage as “a monumental victory” for millions of public service workers who have been unfairly denied their rightful benefits.
The Social Security Fairness Act aims to correct a 50-year mistake by repealing two federal policies that reduce payments to those receiving both Social Security and state or federal pensions, such as teachers, police officers, firefighters, postal workers, and other public employees. The impact will be felt by approximately 2 million individuals affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and nearly 800,000 retirees impacted by the Government Pension Offset (GPO).
The legislation’s passage marks a significant step forward in recognizing the hard work of millions of Americans who have dedicated their careers to public service. According to Senator Sherrod Brown, “Social Security is a bedrock of our middle class. You pay into it for 40 quarters, you earned it, it should be there when you retire.”
