The AI Smartphones That Never Materialized in 2024
As the year draws to a close, it’s clear that the promises of AI-powered phones have not yet come to fruition. Despite Google and Apple’s efforts to integrate artificial intelligence into their devices, we’re left with a slew of underwhelming updates.
Google’s Pixel 9 series was touted as a major leap forward in AI capabilities, but ultimately, it feels like a collection of disconnected features that don’t truly enhance the user experience. The company’s Gemini AI has been hyped for years, and while some of its components are useful, they’re not integrated in any meaningful way.
Similarly, Apple’s iPhone 16 shipped without its touted “Apple Intelligence” feature, only to have it arrive a month later with underwhelming updates. Notification summaries, writing tools, and a new glowing UI for Siri do little to change the fact that AI has not yet become the transformative force it promised to be.
In an interview with The Verge, Google said that the company is still figuring out how to integrate AI into our phones in meaningful ways. But the noise around AI has become so loud that it’s difficult to separate signal from noise.
