Yoast CEO Calls For ‘Federated’ Approach To WordPress Repository
In the midst of controversy surrounding WordPress’s governance and ownership structure, Yoast CEO Joost de Walk has called for a radical shift in the way the open-source content management system (CMS) is managed. De Walk, in a blog post, proposed a “federated” approach to the WordPress repository, effectively decentralizing control over the platform.
In his post, de Walk emphasized that the current structure of the project, which has Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg at the helm, is no longer tenable. He stated that the decision-making process should be democratized and distributed across a network of trusted stakeholders.
WP Engine, a web hosting provider, welcomed this initiative in its own blog post, saying it is committed to working with other leaders on the project to create a more inclusive and transparent governance model.
The idea of taking control away from Mullenweg has been floated before. Earlier this month, 20 signatories, including core contributors, issued an open letter urging him to explore alternative solutions that prioritize community interests over individual ambitions.
De Walk’s call for a federated approach comes after WP Engine secured a preliminary injunction against WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg and Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. This move was seen as a major escalation in the long-standing feud between the two parties.
The controversy surrounding WordPress has far-reaching implications for the tech industry. The platform’s massive user base and ecosystem of developers make it an essential tool for many businesses. Any change to its governance structure would have significant repercussions on the broader technology landscape.
As de Walk prepares to discuss the proposal with leaders in the WordPress community next month, it remains unclear how this new direction will be received.
