Illinois City Sparks Complaints, Petition by Limiting Hanukkah Menorah Display to Just a Few Hours
A petition is circulating in Lake Forest, Illinois after the city announced it will only allow a limited Hanukkah menorah display as part of an organized special event. The decision has sparked complaints and concerns among the community.
The Change.org petition, authored by a local “interfaith family,” expressed disappointment and frustration over the sudden change in policy. “Last year’s menorah display was allowed to remain up for the entire eight days of Hanukkah, but this year, the city is only allowing it to be displayed for a few hours on December 29th,” the petition states.
According to Rabbi Moshe Spalter of Chabad of Lake Forest, last year’s event saw a successful menorah display that remained up for the duration of Hanukkah. However, this year, the city has chosen to only allow a limited time frame for the display.
The petition is calling on the City of Lake Forest to reinstate the original plan and allow the menorah to remain up throughout the eight days of Hanukkah, citing its importance in promoting inclusivity and celebrating diversity.
“We have been trying to get the city to do it, it’s not so simple and at this point that it’s so close to Hanukkah we are just hoping that over the next year we will start to get to work on it right away and hopefully by next year they will be able to allow it,” Rabbi Spalter emphasized.
The petition also highlights the positive impact of last year’s menorah display, stating “it brought great joy to us and was well-received by our community.”
Chabad of Lake Forest has been hosting events at Market Square in the city, including a menorah lighting ceremony.
