**A Conversation With Sonic 3’s Tails, Colleen O’Shaughnessy**
As part of the whirlwind promotional tour for the highly-anticipated release of Paramount Pictures’ new film, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” io9 had the pleasure of sitting down with none other than Colleen O’Shaughnessy, the talented voice actress behind everyone’s favorite blue blur buddy, Miles “Tails” Prower.
In this exclusive conversation, we dive into the making of the latest installment in the Sonic franchise, as well as O’Shaughnessy’s own experiences playing one of gaming’s most iconic characters. We also touch on her thoughts about the film’s themes and what she hopes audiences will take away from it.
**On the set**
io9: Colleen, congratulations on the new film! What was it like being back in the shoes – or should I say, tail-coons – of Tails for this installment?
Colleen O’Shaughnessy: Oh, thank you so much! It’s always a thrill to revisit Miles and get back into his energetic and mischievous mindset. The set was electric, as always. We had an amazing crew and cast, and I think that really shows on screen.
io9: That’s fantastic to hear! What were some of the biggest changes or challenges for you in this new film?
O’Shaughnessy: Honestly, it was a huge undertaking, but in the best way possible. The story gets a lot darker and more complex than before, which presented some interesting opportunities for Tails as a character. I had to dig deep and find new emotional depths to bring him to life.
**Themes and impact**
io9: As you mentioned, this film takes on some heavier themes. What do you hope audiences will take away from it?
O’Shaughnessy: Above all, I think we’re exploring the power of friendship and found family. The relationships between Tails, Sonic, and their allies are at the heart of this story, and I believe that message resonates deeply with fans and newcomers alike.
io9: That’s beautiful. Can you tell us a bit about the filmmaking process? Were there any particularly memorable moments on set?
O’Shaughnessy: [laughs] Oh boy, where do I even begin? Okay, let me say this – Idris Elba as Knuckles was an absolute dream to work with! His energy and charisma are simply infectious. And of course, Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Robotnik is always a highlight.
io9: That sounds like a fantastic experience! Finally, what do you hope the audience takes away from Sonic 3?
O’Shaughnessy: I hope that people leave with a renewed sense of hope and unity. This film shows us that even in the darkest times, we can band together and come out stronger on the other side.
