For former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, the idea of moving up to light heavyweight is nothing more than a fleeting notion at present. According to his recent episode of MMArcade Podcast, he’s “playing around with the idea” of making the jump in weight class.
Whittaker, now 34 years old, has been reeling from several crushing losses in the middleweight division. Notably, he’s gone down to current champion Dricus du Plessis, former champion Israel Adesanya, and No. 3-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov’s teammate, Nassourdine Chimaev. The only ranked fighter above him that Whittaker hasn’t faced is Sean Strickland.
As the Australian fighter weighs his options, it appears he hasn’t made a definitive decision on the matter. Still, considering his current position in the middleweight division, a potential move to light heavyweight could be an attractive alternative.
At 34 years old, Whittaker’s path back to a title shot in the middleweight division seems increasingly unclear. Moreover, with losses to du Plessis and Adesanya solidifying his ranking further down the pecking order, it may be wise for him to reassess his current trajectory.
A move to light heavyweight could provide a fresh start for Whittaker, presenting an opportunity to redefine himself within the organization. It remains uncertain whether this notion will manifest into tangible action in the near future.
