Engadget’s Games of the Year 2024
As the year comes to a close, our team has had the opportunity to play and revisit some incredible games across various platforms. We’ve seen innovative gameplay mechanics, breathtaking visuals, and unforgettable storytelling. Here are our picks for the top games of 2024.
1. Silent Hill 2 – This psychological horror game is a remake of the cult classic that still manages to send shivers down our spines even today. The way it manipulates you into feeling James Sunderland’s confusion and grief is nothing short of genius, and the combat system has been completely overhauled for a more engaging experience.
2. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 – At first glance, this action-packed game might seem like just another Gears of War clone. But beneath its surface lies depth and intelligence. It masterfully captures the tone and atmosphere of the Warhammer 40K universe while also offering a surprisingly satisfying close combat system.
3. The Last of Us Part II Remastered – While we know it’s not a new release, the addition of “No Return” mode in this remastered version has me (and apparently many others) coming back for more. Who knew I had so much cardio potential? The way the game’s combat system rewards strategy and skill is unmatched, and I’m thrilled to see how much replay value it holds.
4. Vendetta Forever – This rapid action simulator turned out to be one of the most addictive VR experiences I’ve ever had. Zipping between faceless enemies as you snatch weapons in mid-air like a ninja is an incredible workout that I won’t soon forget. The “LO-KILL-MOTION” gimmick really made it stand out from other games.
