Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is speaking out against the NFL’s decision to play games on Christmas Day and its scheduling format.
Roethlisberger expressed his discontent during a recent interview, stating that it’s “miserable” and “unfair” for players. He believes the league prioritizes financial gain over player well-being.
“It’s not fair for the players,” Roethlisberger said. “You wanna talk about injuries and making the game safer, changing the kickoff rule and preventing guys on hip-drop tackles, and concussions, and this that and the other, and you’re going to make guys play the most violent game in the world, arguably, three games in 11 days. I mean, there’s no time for your body to get healthy and rest.”
Roethlisberger’s comments echo those made by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who also expressed his disapproval of the grueling schedule.
“It’s not a good feeling,” Mahomes said. “You never want to play this amount of games in this short of time. It’s not great for your body. But, at the end of the day, it’s your job, your profession. You have to come to work and do it.”
The NFL’s decision to schedule Christmas Day games has sparked controversy among players and fans alike. Many argue that it is unfair to expect athletes to perform at their best while also having limited time for rest and recovery.
Roethlisberger’s comments serve as a warning about the potential long-term effects of this type of scheduling on player health and well-being.
