Starbucks strike to expand to more than 300 stores, union says
A walkout at Starbucks is set to expand to over 300 US stores tomorrow, with approximately 5,000 workers expected to join the five-day labor action that will conclude later in the day. This comes as a major escalation of a dispute between the company and its employees’ union.
The strike, which initially began on Friday, has already seen workers at more than 60 locations walk off their jobs in 12 major cities. The expansion is set to be the largest yet by the Starbucks Workers Union, which represents staff at over 525 stores across the country.
One barista from Ashland, Oregon, emphasized the financial struggles many employees face, saying “Half the baristas in my store drive 30 minutes one way because they can’t afford to live closer to work. These strikes are an initial show of strength.”
The walkout comes as a protest against a lack of progress in contract talks with Starbucks, with the union accusing the company of failing to honor a commitment made earlier this year to reach a labor agreement by 2024.
