Kīlauea Volcano Ends Year With Impressive Lava Fountains
As the year comes to a close, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has announced an eruption within the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is elevating Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from ADVISORY to WARNING and its aviation color code from YELLOW to RED as this eruption and associated hazards are evaluated.
According to webcam images, a line of fissures has erupted lava fountains that are feeding a flow within the summit caldera. The eruption is taking place in a closed area of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
The primary concern in relation to this eruption is high levels of volcanic gases like water vapor, carbon-dioxide, and sulfur-dioxide, which can have far-reaching effects downwind of Kīlauea. Sulfur-dioxide gas can react with water vapor to create a volcanic haze also known as vog. Vog can cause negative health impacts, damage crops, and even create acid rain.
It is essential for residents and visitors alike to be aware of the ongoing situation at Kīlauea volcano, particularly in regards to the hazards posed by volcanic gases.
