Animoca Brands’ Yat Siu’s X Account Hacked to Promote Fake Crypto Token
In a shocking turn of events, Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu’s X account has been compromised and used to falsely promote a non-existent token. This latest incident highlights the growing threat of phishing scams in the cryptocurrency space.
According to reports, ZachXBT, a crypto detective, had already warned users about a series of phishing emails deployed by scammers just hours before the fraudulent token was deployed. Unfortunately, it appears that Yat Siu himself may have fallen victim to one of these schemes.
In a statement on X, Animoca Brands confirmed the hack and assured the public that there is no official token or NFT launch from the company. The company urged users to stay vigilant and not engage with the compromised account.
ZachXBT further shed light on the scam, revealing that over $500K has been stolen in the past month through a series of 15 X account takeovers. These hacks were perpetrated by an attacker who targeted high-profile accounts, including those belonging to Kick, Cursor, Alex Blania, The Arena, and Brett.
The scammers used sophisticated tactics, including impersonating the X team with fake copyright infringement notices and creating a sense of urgency to trick victims into visiting phishing sites to reset their two-factor authentication (2FA) or password. To avoid falling prey to these scams, ZachXBT recommends using unique email addresses for different services and enabling security keys for 2FA on critical accounts.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that even the most well-established figures in the crypto space are not immune to hacking attacks. It is essential for all users to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from these types of threats.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important for traders and investors to stay informed about the latest scams and security measures.
