Scammer Steals $500K Through X Account Takeovers and Phishing Scams
In a recent incident, a scammer has stolen a staggering $500,000 through a combination of X account takeovers and phishing scams. The hack highlights the importance of maintaining robust security measures to protect one’s digital assets.
ZachXBT, a well-known cryptocurrency enthusiast and influencer, recently fell victim to this scam after his Animoca Brands (@animocabrands) Twitter account was compromised. The hacker took control of ZachXBT’s account and used it to spread misinformation about crypto-related topics.
The tweet in question states that @animocabrands is compromised and warns users not to engage with the account. Wesley Munene, a popular cryptocurrency influencer, shared this warning on his own Twitter handle, urging all followers to be cautious when interacting with suspicious accounts.
The scam also involved phishing emails, which were designed to trick unsuspecting victims into divulging their login credentials. These types of attacks are becoming increasingly common in the crypto space.
To avoid falling prey to similar scams, ZachXBT recommends limiting email address reuse between services and enabling 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) on important accounts.
It is essential for all cryptocurrency enthusiasts and investors to stay vigilant and be aware of these types of threats. We must protect our digital assets from scammers and maintain the integrity of the crypto market.
