Microsoft Warns Windows Users—Do Not Update Your PC This Way
As the holiday season comes to a close, many users are still catching up on their belated security updates. However, in a rare move, Microsoft has issued a stark warning for its Windows 11 users: do not update your PC this way.
The issue arises when users create an external media copy of their Windows 11 installation with newer updates, which can result in the device being frozen out of receiving future security patches. This occurs only when using media to install Windows 11 version 24H2 and including the October or November security updates as part of the installation.
In a statement, Microsoft confirmed that this issue affects only a “very small number of PCs” and is not applicable to those who installed the updates via Windows Update.
The company has provided a solution for affected users: download the Media Creation tool, create a fresh media file, and reinstall the OS. This cautionary warning serves as a reminder of the importance of following proper installation procedures when updating your PC’s operating system.
It remains unclear why this issue was not addressed prior to the release of Windows 11 version 24H2, but it is imperative that users take heed of Microsoft’s warning and exercise extreme care in their update processes to avoid falling victim to this unusual glitch.
