Matt Reeves Sheds Light On ‘The Batman 2’ Plot Amid DC Universe Uncertainty
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Matt Reeves has opened up about the plot of his upcoming sequel, ‘The Batman 2′. While there was no concrete information revealed, the director did provide some intriguing insights into the film’s direction.
As reported by Forbes, Reeves emphasized that The Batman universe will remain outside the DC Universe, contradicting previous rumors linking it to the larger franchise. It seems that this narrative thread has been consistently denied, with James Gunn stating earlier that Clayface would be part of the DCU. Matt Reeves’ preference for independence suggests that he’ll continue exploring his own unique vision.
The director also hinted at a darker tone for ‘The Batman 2’, citing real-world turmoil as inspiration. According to him, “there’s a lot more grey,” with an increased focus on societal division and unrest. This could result in a grittier, more grounded take on the character.
Reeves also alluded to the challenges that come with navigating this complex moral landscape: “How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It’s not as clear as going, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys’.” This ambiguity could lead to a more nuanced exploration of the character.
The film is expected to take place immediately following the events of The Penguin series. Winter will be setting in over Gotham City, and it remains unclear whether any established villains from previous films or shows will make an appearance. It’s worth noting that Barry Keoghan’s Joker has already been confirmed for ‘The Batman 2′, although James Gunn dismissed rumors of a dedicated Joker series.
Reeves’ reluctance to involve supernatural elements may preclude the inclusion of some iconic DC characters, such as Mr. Freeze or Black Mask. However, there is still room for creative reinterpretation within these constraints.
