Trump Negotiating a New Panama Canal Treaty for the American People
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, he faces numerous complex foreign policy challenges. One issue that has garnered significant attention is the 1977 Panama Canal Treaties, which transferred ownership of the Panama Canal from the United States to Panama by the end of the century.
In a surprise move, President Jimmy Carter negotiated giving full control of the Panama Canal to Gen. Omar Torrijos, the military leader of Panama who seized power in a coup d’état. The giveaway was met with widespread disapproval across America and played a significant role in Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential victory.
It is essential for Americans to understand that many legal scholars concur that a United States president has the authority to rescind or terminate a treaty, as exemplified by President George W. Bush withdrawing from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002 and other instances throughout history.
