Riot Games does not appear to be sweating over the reported financial performance of its Netflix series, “Arcane”. Despite allegedly losing money, the game developer is taking a rather laid-back approach to the situation.
According to Bloomberg, “Arcane” has failed to generate significant revenue for Riot Games. The show reportedly cost $250 million to produce, with Netflix paying Riot’s parent company Tencent an additional $3 million per episode. This adds up to more than half of the production budget being covered by external parties. Despite this, it seems that the financial losses may not be a concern for the game developer.
Riot co-founder Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill has taken to Reddit to defend the show, stating that it is cynical to judge “Arcane” solely on its financial performance. He emphasized that Riot does not prioritize short-term profit gains but instead focuses on delivering exceptional value to its audience in the long run.
It appears that this approach may not be universally accepted by all employees at Riot Games. The report suggests that some staff members were not enthusiastic about investing significant resources into “Arcane”, particularly when it came at a time when 11% of the company’s workforce was being laid off due to financial constraints.
Despite the reported losses, fans of both the show and game do not appear to be concerned. If Riot is willing to invest in projects like “Arcane” that resonate with its audience, then the majority of viewers seem content to accept this approach.
