State Department’s ‘Global Engagement Center’ Accused of Censoring Americans Shuts Its Doors
The Global Engagement Center (GEC), a State Department project accused of being used to censor American media outlets and conservative voices, has officially shut down. The decision comes amid ongoing controversy and allegations that the agency was weaponized to suppress free speech and violate the First Amendment.
According to reports, the GEC had been misusing its authority by branding certain news organizations as “unreliable” or “risky,” leading to a loss of advertising revenue and reduced circulation of their reporting. This alleged censorship scheme targeted conservative news outlets such as The Daily Wire and The Federalist.
The allegations surfaced in a recent lawsuit brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Daily Wire, and the Federalist against the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and other government officials. The lawsuit claims that the GEC’s actions constituted a “conspiracy to censor, deplatform, and demonetize American media outlets disfavored by the federal government.”
Furthermore, America First Legal, an organization headed by Stephen Miller, former Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy under President Donald Trump, revealed that the GEC used taxpayer dollars to create a video game called “Cat Park” aimed at inoculating youth abroad against disinformation. Critics, however, argued that this initiative was “anti-populist” and instead promoted specific political beliefs.
The shutdown of the GEC marks a significant victory for those advocating for free speech and accountability in government agencies. As concerns over the agency’s actions mounted, it appears that the State Department has ultimately decided to disband the project, acknowledging the allegations and putting an end to its controversial activities.
In related news, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced earlier this month that he had filed a lawsuit against the State Department and other officials for allegedly engaging in a conspiracy to censor American media outlets.
