One such egregious example is MoneyGram, which took over a week to disclose a cyberattack that exposed customer data. The company initially downplayed the incident, stating only that it was dealing with a “cybersecurity issue.” It wasn’t until weeks later that they admitted hackers had stolen Social Security numbers, government identification documents, and transaction information from millions of customers.
Another notable example is Hot Topic, which has remained mum on a data breach that affected an astonishing 57 million customers. Despite the massive scale of the incident, the company has refused to comment or notify those impacted, leaving them in the dark about their compromised personal data.
These badly handled data breaches not only put customer trust at risk but also highlight the need for increased transparency and accountability from companies when it comes to cybersecurity threats.
