Animoca Brands’ Exec Explains How His X Account Was Hacked Despite 2FA
Yat Siu, co-founder and chair of blockchain gaming giant Animoca Brands, has recently fallen victim to a hack on his X account. In a shocking revelation, Siu revealed that despite having two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, his account was still compromised by hackers.
According to Siu’s explanation, the attacker managed to bypass 2FA by submitting a request with a non-registered email address through the account recovery page. What is alarming is that the registered email did not receive any notifications regarding this critical action, such as changes to the two-factor authentication setup. This lack of notification could have prevented the hack.
To make matters worse, Siu suspects that the hacker used phishing tactics to obtain his government-issued ID and bypass further security checks. He urged X to implement stronger notifications for sensitive actions like 2FA modifications, emphasizing the need for better verification measures to protect user accounts.
Siu’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strong password hygiene and not relying solely on 2FA for account security. The executive warned that 2FA is “not enough” to secure an account and emphasized the need for users to be vigilant against phishing attempts, which have become increasingly sophisticated.
This incident highlights the urgent necessity for platforms to strengthen their security measures and provide better protection for user accounts.
