FAA Places Restrictions on Drone Company After Florida Boy Injured at Holiday Airshow, Underwent Heart Surgery
In a shocking incident, a 7-year-old boy in Florida was severely injured when multiple drones malfunctioned and crashed to the ground during a holiday airshow. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has subsequently suspended certain operations by the Texas-based drone company responsible for the accident.
The FAA confirmed that it has suspended the Part 107 Waiver for Sky Elements Drones, which allowed the operator to fly at night, over people, and out of sight. This move effectively bars the company from performing its light shows until further notice.
On December 21st, a drone show in Orlando’s Lake Eola Park went awry when hundreds of drones began falling from the sky, causing chaos among spectators. A young boy, identified as Alexander, was struck by at least one drone and sustained severe injuries. The boy underwent an emergency open-heart surgery due to the devastating nature of his injuries.
As investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) gather evidence, Sky Elements is facing scrutiny over the incident. Memory cards from the malfunctioning drones will be sent to the NTSB’s recorders laboratory in Washington D.C. for analysis.
A preliminary report on the incident is expected within 30 days, with a comprehensive final report anticipated between one and two years after the accident.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of drone operations and the potential risks they pose to spectators.
