A recent post on Reddit has sparked a heated debate about a common yet annoying issue in the aviation industry: passengers’ reluctance to dispose of their trash properly during flights.
In the thread, a user shared an anecdote about a flight attendant who went above and beyond to retrieve a passenger’s newspaper they had left behind. The humorous account has garnered over 10,000 upvotes and sparked a wave of reactions from users, many of whom have experienced similar situations on their own travels.
According to Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert, the issue of in-flight trash is not limited to this single incident. In fact, he notes that cleaning up after flights has become increasingly rare due to time constraints and a lack of resources.
“Cleaning up between flights is something carriers used to do, but they don’t schedule planes with enough time on the ground for it anymore,” Leff explained in an interview with Fox News Digital.
The expert emphasized the importance of passengers taking responsibility for their own waste. “You need to do it at your seat on a plane, as long as the airline makes it reasonably easy, coming down the aisle with a bag to collect trash and giving you enough time to gather it,” he said.
Leff’s words are echoed by many Redditors, who have shared their own experiences with in-flight litter. One user joked that the solution is quite simple: “The airlines need to pass a trash collection around like they do money collection at church – for the same reason. Guilt people into filling it up as it passes by. Problem solved.”
Another user added, “Don’t just abandon those popcorn bags on the floor… Carry them to the bins by the exit. It’s only a few feet.”
