Title: Former ‘Starfield’ Dev Says Bethesda Should Switch To Unreal Engine 5
In a recent interview with KIWI TALKZ, Nate Purkeypile, a former Lead Artist at Bethesda and contributor to games like Starfield, Fallout, and Skyrim, expressed his thoughts on the company’s engine choice. Specifically, he suggested that it would be beneficial for them to switch to Unreal Engine 5.
Purkeypile noted that while he acknowledges the significant investment in the Creation Engine, he believes it is now time for Bethesda to evolve and move towards more modern technology. He cites the example of CD Projekt Red, which made a similar switch from their own engine to Unreal Engine 4 for their latest release, Cyberpunk 2077.
“I think it’s pretty telling that there are some studios with similar tech that have made that leap lately,” he said, highlighting the challenges and limitations of maintaining an aging technology base while trying to keep up with industry advancements. He emphasized that such a switch would require significant effort, but also suggested that having an extensive knowledgebase and large talent pool at their disposal could facilitate this process.
In his words, “I’m of the opinion…that it’s easier to stay relevant and not always try to play catch-up.” Purkeypile also stressed the importance of avoiding the constant struggle of trying to keep up with the latest trends while developing a new game. He used an analogy to illustrate this challenge, stating that it is like “laying down tracks while on fire.”
It remains unclear whether Bethesda will heed this advice and abandon their Creation Engine in favor of Unreal Engine 5 or other options. The company has not yet made any official statements regarding the matter. Nevertheless, Purkeypile’s comments serve as a reminder that, for some developers, the benefits of adapting to new technologies outweigh potential drawbacks.
