Nonprofit Group Joins Elon Musk’s Effort to Block OpenAI’s For-Profit Transition
Encode, a nonprofit organization focused on ensuring the voices of younger generations are heard in conversations about AI’s impacts, has requested permission to file an amicus brief in support of Elon Musk’s injunction to halt OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit entity.
As reported by TechCrunch, Musk filed for a preliminary injunction late last month to block OpenAI’s planned transformation from a nonprofit research lab into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). The billionaire entrepreneur has accused OpenAI of abandoning its original philanthropic mission and depriving rivals of capital through anticompetitive tactics.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit, but it has since taken on outside investments from venture capitalists and companies like Microsoft. In a recent blog post, the organization announced plans to transition into a PBC, a move that would allow it to prioritize its pecuniary interests over any public benefit.
