OpenAI Explores Structural Changes to Enhance AGI Mission
December 28, 2024 – OpenAI has announced its intentions to reassess and revamp its corporate structure in a bid to further advance its ambitious Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) mission. The AI research organization is looking to transform its existing dual entity model into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), aimed at striking a delicate balance between profit-making and public interest.
According to reports, OpenAI’s initial setup consisted of both non-profit and for-profit entities. This arrangement allowed the company to secure funding from donations and attract significant investment through its partnership with Microsoft, worth $1 billion. However, as the organization scaled up its ambitions, it became clear that a more robust structural model was required.
The proposed changes seek to transform the existing for-profit entity into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), permitting OpenAI to raise funds from investors while ensuring alignment with the public interest of advancing AGI for the betterment of humanity. This shift is expected to multiply resources available to its non-profit arm, allowing it to expand initiatives in areas such as healthcare, education, and science.
The company’s Board of Directors, in collaboration with external advisors, will be responsible for implementing these structural changes to ensure a successful advancement of its mission.
