Trump Asks Supreme Court to Let Him Rescue TikTok from US Ban
President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to allow him to negotiate a deal to save TikTok from a looming US ban. In an amicus brief filed with the court, Trump claims that he alone possesses the “consummate dealmaking expertise” and “electoral mandate” necessary to resolve the issues surrounding TikTok’s future in the United States.
Trump’s sudden interest in saving TikTok comes as a surprise, given his previous stance on the issue. During his first term, he pushed for a ban on the platform over national security concerns. However, after his campaign successfully utilized TikTok during the 2024 election, it appears that Trump has changed his tune.
In his filing with the Supreme Court, Trump asks to have the deadline for determining whether the US ban will be enforced stayed until after he takes office. The current deadline is January 19th, just one day before Trump’s inauguration. He claims that any deal he would negotiate “would obviate the need for this Court to decide the historically challenging First Amendment question presented here on the current, highly expedited basis.”
The request comes as a surprise given the strict stance Trump has taken on TikTok in the past. However, it appears that his views have shifted dramatically since the platform became a crucial tool for his re-election campaign.
TikTok’s fate hangs in the balance, with its Chinese parent company ByteDance facing intense scrutiny over concerns that the app could be used as a vessel for Chinese espionage or propaganda. The US government has deemed that the risk posed by TikTok outweighs any potential benefits it may bring to society.
The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on the matter in the coming days, with the outcome expected to have far-reaching implications for free speech and national security in the United States.
